AI-powered mental health chatbots have emerged as an innovative solution to bridge the gap in mental health services, which often face issues like limited accessibility, high costs, and social stigma. By integrating artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, these chatbots engage users in real-time conversations, offering psychological guidance, emotional support, and symptom management. Their ability to provide immediate, anonymous assistance makes mental health resources more accessible to a broader population. These chatbots are embedded in mobile applications, (...) social media platforms, and web-based services, ensuring continuous availability and personalized interactions. Advances in machine learning and sentiment analysis have improved chatbot responses, making them more adaptive and human-like. They serve as virtual therapists, guiding users through structured interventions and coping strategies to manage anxiety, depression, and stress effectively. Despite their advantages, AI-powered mental health chatbots present ethical, technical, and regulatory challenges. Concerns around data privacy, AI bias, and emotional intelligence need to be addressed to enhance their reliability. Moreover, their effectiveness is limited in severe mental health cases, emphasizing the need for a hybrid model that combines AI-driven therapy with human intervention. Abstract: In this work, polystyrene/waste tires composites were prepared by incorporating of waste tires into polydisperse commercial polystyrene in a melt-mixing method. The rheological characterization of PS and PS/composite have been studied and compared. These properties were studied using ARES-Rheometer under nitrogen atmosphere in parallel plate geometry with diameter 8 mm. The measurements are carried out over a wide range of temperatures ranged from 120°C to 220°C and frequencies from 100 to 0.1 radians per second. The complex modulus (G*) were (...) evaluated and compared with those of unfilled PS. The dynamic mechanical properties and stability at elevated temperatures were found to increase with the addition of waste tires to PS as confirmed by the results. The results showed that the value of G* at  = 1.0 radian/s is 1.8104 and 4.4104 Pa for PS and PS/waste tires, respectively. This difference rises at low frequencies-branch to be the value of G* at  = 0.06 radian/s is 8.8102 and 7.8103 Pa for PS and PS/waste tires, respectively. These properties were studied using ARES-Rheometer under nitrogen atmosphere in parallel plate geometry with diameter 8 mm. The measurements are carried out over a wide range of temperatures ranged from 120°C to 220°C and frequencies from 100 to 0.1 radians per second. The dynamic and complex viscosity of the PS composites were studied and compared with (...) those of unfilled PS. The results showed that the frequency,  is shifted from 0.46 to 0.072 radians/s and the value of dynamic viscosity increases from 5.0104 to 1.3105 Pa.s by the addition of the rubber for PS. Zero-shear viscosity, 0 was found to be increased from is 9.5104 for PS/waste tire composite to 4.5104 for PS. The flow activation energy is calculated from 0 by using the rheometric software to be 1.063 105 and 1.46 105 J/mol.K for Ps and PS composite, respectively. (shrink)

Where the values of J' at  = 0.06 radians/s are 110-4 and 5.310-5 Pa-1 for PS and PS composite, respectively At  = 0.1 radians/s the addition of the rubber alters the value of J'' from 1.610-4 to 8.410-5 Pa-1. This research inculcates the antecedents like perceived ease of use (PEOU) social influence (SI), satisfaction (S), and intention to use (ITU) to chart out the perception of the wireless based educational activities during the COVID-19 outbreak in the country and it aims to produce an empirical analysis of the easiness and social influence of users to accept the newly adopted technology and calculating the Web based pedagogical challenges via interpreting the users’ intention. For the data analysis 216 questionnaires have been collected from the teacher and students among three public universities in Sindh and the existing review develops a proposed conceptual framework model to meet the objectives of the study. In the way of the interpretation of data SPSS version 24 was brought in use and the testes of the hypotheses were carried out by means of regression and correlations. The research follows the limitation to meet the quantitative research methodology, teachers’ web based easiness and social feedback to deliver the online teaching and the recommendations urge to discover a research by using different factors. In this work, polystyrene/waste tires composites were prepared using the melt-mixing method.. The effect of the preparation conditions of the PS/waste tires composite is investigated in this work by using Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) technique. Stability at elevated temperatures were found to increase with the addition of waste tires to PS as confirmed by the results. GPC results indicate that the preparation conditions of the PS/waste tires composite has no effect on the Ps chains as indicated by GPC technique. The (...) signals of the GPC for unfilled and filled PS are similar. That evidences no thermo-mechanical chain degradation is taken place during the addition of the waste tires under the conditions of the melt-mixing process . (shrink)

The dynamic mechanical properties of PS and PS/composite have been evaluated and compared. These properties were studied using ARES-Rheometer under nitrogen atmosphere in parallel plate geometry with diameter 8 mm. The measurements are carried out over a wide range of temperatures ranged from 120°C to 220°C and frequencies from 100 to 0.1 radians per second. The shear creep stress J(t) (...) and loss factor were studied and compared with those of unfilled PS. The dynamic mechanical properties and stability at elevated temperatures were found to increase with the addition of waste tires to PS as confirmed by the results. From the results, the value of J(t) modulus for PS/waste tire is higher than this for the original material of PS. The incorporation of the rubber to the PS changes the value of J(t) at 0.001 second from 5.610-6 to 3.710-6 Pa-1 for PS and PS/waste tire, respectively and this difference increases with time. This confirmed that PS/waste tire composite exhibits higher stability at 180°C for a long time than the original unfilled PS. At frequency  = 6.7102 radians/s , the value of tan increases about 20% by the incorporation of the rubber filler, due to the increase in the G'' modulus particularly at low frequencies in the flow regime. This paper interrogates Abdul Rasheed Abiodun Adeoye’s ‘neo-alienation’ directorial style’ as a viable directing technique on African theatre stage. The ‘neo-alienation’ style is an offshoot of Bertolt Brecht’s epic theatre that enhances the total theatre aesthetics and encourages actors’-audience’s relationship. It is a directorial style that has been tested severally on the Nigerian stage and proved worthy of exploration. Using the participant-observation and the deductive research methods, the theory shall be examined in relation to its usage in the production (...) of Adeoye’s The Smart Game- (A Neo- Alienation Script) and Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel as directed by AbdulRasheed Abiodun Adeoye in 2002 and 2004 respectively. Thus, the study aims to archive and document the ‘neo alienation’ directing theory because of its immense aesthetics values to African plays and theatre directors. The study also showcases Adeoye as a conscientious theatre director, in whose works, other directors can learn from. The study concludes that the ‘neo-alienation’ aesthetics has been found to be a unique style full of theatrical spectacles that are capable of adding aesthetics and enhance African productions if explored. It is, therefore, recommended that Nigerian and African directors should work towards propounding at least a directorial style each which will add value to African theatre; the study also suggests that directors who have evolved their own directorial styles should endeavor to have them documented for posterity. This paper aims to determine knowledge management (KM) factors which have strong impact on high performance. Also, the study aims to compare KMM between intermediate colleges. This study was applied on three intermediate colleges in Gaza strip, Palestine. Asian productivity organization model was applied to measure KMM. Second dimension which assess high performance was developed by the authors. The controlled sample was 190. Several statistical tools were used for data analysis and hypotheses testing, including reliability correlation using Cronbach’s alpha, “ANOVA”, (...) simple linear regression and step wise regression and LSD test. The overall findings of the current study show that maturity level is in the second level. Findings also support the main hypothesis and its sub- hypotheses. The most important factors effecting high performance are the processes, KM leadership, people and KM outcomes. In addition, there are differences in high performance for college (PTC). Furthermore, the current study is unique by the virtue of its nature, scope and way of implied investigation, as it is the first comparative study between intermediate colleges in Palestine that explores the status of KMM using the Asian productivity model. Long before the colonialists stepped into the shore of the Nigerian nation and African Continent in general,masquerade played a central role in the lives of the people. Even at the moment, among many others, masquerade performs the role of social control across some Nigerian rural communities. It is based on this that the researchers are motivated to examine the social role of masquerade in the society with the aimofusing the knowledge to review how cultural institution like masquerade can be used (...) to resuscitate social orders in the contemporary Nigerian socio-economic and political systems. To this end, the critical discourse analysis methodology was adopted for the study. Through this research apparatus, the paper systematically analyses the issue. The result shows that cultural institution such as masquerade, if properly given attention to, like in the yesteryears, can control social ills such as corruption, bribery, and lots of other social problems that have bedeviled the Nigerian nation over the years. Speech therapy is a clinical intervention that addresses communication disorders affecting speech production, language comprehension, fluency, and voice quality. While essential for improving quality of life and social participation, speech therapy faces significant challenges including professional shortages, accessibility barriers, engagement difficulties, subjective assessment practices, and limited personalization. These challenges are magnified for low-resource languages like Malayalam, which lacks standardized assessment tools, therapy materials, and trained professionals familiar with its unique phonological features such as distinctive phonemes and geminate consonants. Conventional speech (...) therapy approaches designed for widely spoken languages often fail to address language-specific articulation patterns, creating a critical need for technology-assisted solutions that can overcome geographical barriers, standardize assessment procedures, and preserve linguistic authenticity while providing accessible intervention for Malayalam speakers with speech disorders. This paper proposes an AI-driven speech therapy assistant tailored for Malayalam speakers with speech disorders. The proposed system leverages deep learning techniques to address common articulation errors, such as mispronunciations and fluency issues like stammering. The framework aims to analyse speech patterns, identify errors, and recommend personalized therapeutic exercises. By focusing on Malayalam-specific phonetics, this research bridges the gap in accessible and culturally relevant speech therapy solutions. (shrink)

Abstract Qadi `Abdul-Jabbar, although has come to be Known as a Mu`tazili theologian, can be certainly mentioned as a moral philosopher by attention to his ethical views in the theological books. The paper is going to present his ethical opinions concerning normative ethics and Meta-ethics. It shows that `Abdul-Jabbar is a rationalist moral philosopher, who considers reason as the origin of moral obligations, and as the means of evaluating the rightness and wrongfulness of actions. Moreover, he is an (...) essentialist, that is, he regards the nature of actions as the source of rightness or wrongfulness of actions, rather than the external factors. Furthermore, he is a rule-deontologist, who holds human beings must act in accordance with rules and duties. In addition to these, he is an ethical intuitionist and foundationalist; that is to say, he believes that there exist basic moral propositions that can be intellectually intuitionable. These propositions expressing moral principles are evident and necessary ones, and determinant foundations of other duties, whether theoretical or practical. (shrink)

This paper is based on the premise that public officials in developing countries lack the necessary skills to implement Knowledge Management (KM) successfully, so a framework is required to facilitate this process. South Africa is the case study. It is therefore necessary to develop a Knowledge Management Implementation Framework (KMIF). Consequently, one of the objectives of this paper is to validate this need and then outline a KMIF that can help government departments in developing countries implement KM and foster a (...) KM culture. A mixed methodology approach was used, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection. Based on the Taro Yamane formula, 139 people were selected from a target population of 221 officials involved in KM in the South African government. DATAtab, a web-based statistics application, was used to analyze the responses. A comprehensive review of several secondary literature sources was carried out. For the literature review, relevant peer-reviewed articles were downloaded from Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Scopus, and Phil Papers. The study posits that officials charged with KM implementation in the South African government lack the necessary implementation skillset, that a need for a KMIF exists, and subsequently outlines a three-stage KMIF to facilitate their efforts. This study recommends that the proposed three-stage KMIF be adopted since it will provide the government (i) a simplified and structured way of realizing KM; (ii) it will be an effective tool that officials can use to guide them on how to implement KM, and (iii) it will cultivate a KM culture within the government. Even though the study is original to the South African government, the findings, however, may be applied to other emerging governments in Africa and beyond. The object of research: The study revolves around KM and service delivery. It ascertains whether KM is a plausible solution to public service delivery challenges. Although the paper is aimed at governments worldwide, it is focusing on South Africa. Investigated problem: While the public service in South Africa has been significantly transformed since apartheid’s end in 1994, the government is now under enormous pressure to deliver and save the public service from further collapse. Recent years have seen an increase in (...) service delivery demonstrations and marches. Many believe the public service delivery mechanisms introduced to circumvent public service delivery challenges have been ineffective. The main scientific results: Despite knowing what must be done, officials have trouble putting their plans, strategies, and policies into action. This is even though service delivery mechanisms were implemented to help them improve service delivery. In fact, only half of the respondents (50.7 %, n=33) were aware of service delivery mechanisms, though 95.4 % (n=62) concurred that KM is a viable solution to improve service delivery. Area of practical use of the research results: Very little research has been conducted on KM as a potential solution to South Africa’s service delivery problems. As a result, this research provides new insights into improving public sector service delivery using KM. Overall, the findings will benefit KM and Public Administration practitioners. (shrink)

The construction of railways has been one of the symbols of advanced technology and modernity in various societies and is known as a means of expanding and transferring goods, men, and their ideas. During the political-economic circumstances of the second half of the 19th century, the first rail line of Iran was built under the Qajar rule. This was an 8 km railway to connect Tehran to Rey with some small wagons, most local people tended to call it Mashin-Doodi, which (...) translates as Smokey Machine. The railway then appeared in southwest Iran as a means of transport for the oil industry which was booming after oil discoveries in Khuzestan. The intercity railway started to operate in 1923 and was 57 km long, connecting Masjed-i-Soleyman to Dar-i-Kahzineh. It was established for exploitative purposes of foreign states resulting in a few small-scale and temporary projects, but the idea of constructing and expanding rail lines based on national investments finally materialized with the first national railroad. Evrenin bir parçası olan insan, yalnızca büyük sorular sorma ve yalnızca büyük cevaplar bekleme yoluyla kendini/kendiliğini anlamaya çalışmadı. Tura’nın zihin-beden ilişkisi problemine önerdiği Ontolojik Nöro/Fenomenal Özdeşlik Tezi etrafında, tekliflerinin ve sorunlarının ne olduğunu göstermeye çalıştık. Tura’nın teklifleri ve sorunlarını göstermenin, zihin felsefesinin temel problem alanlarıyla orijinal bir şekilde yüzleşmenin önünü açtığını düşündük. On 15th August 1947 Indian Subcontinent won freedom from two centuries of British rule. The country was partitioned on the basis of religion. Muslim majority inhabited people formed Pakistan and Hindu majority people formed India. Bengal was partitioned into two. Two thirds of it joined with Pakistan and one third remained with India. Muslim majority inhabited East Bengal was with Pakistan. With the birth of Pakistan on the midnight of 14 August 1947 the eastern part of Bengal became province of (...) Pakistan. Other provinces of Pakistan were Punjab, Sind and Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP). In several reasons this post-colonial state Pakistan state was unconventional. There are at least three reasons for why we can call Pakistan state as a very unconventional or special state: • First, Pakistan state was founded upon religious nationalism. Religion was supposed to cement a new national identity , something that had not been tried before---the only other modern example of a religiously based nation-state being Israel, which was founded a year later than Pakistan. • Second, Pakistan was a country with two discrete territories, separated from each other by about 1,500 km of Indian terrain. West Pakistan was by far the larger of these two wings but East Pakistan was more densely populated. In fact most Pakistani citizens lived in East Pakistan: the First population census in 1951 revealed that Pakistan had 78 million inhabitant, of whom 44 million (55 per cent) lived in East Pakistan. • Third, these two reasons combined with a third: Pakistan did not become heir to any of the colony’s central institutions. India, on the other hand inherited the capital New Delhi as well as most of the civil bureaucracy, armed forces and police. The bulk of the country’s resources and industries, and its major port cities of Mumbai and Kolkata also went to India. By contrast Pakistan inherited largely raw-material producing regions. Whereas the new rulers of India supplanted the British in the old center of colonial power, the new rulers of Pakistan had a much hard time to establish themselves. No other postcolonial state combined the loss of its administrative hub, the need to govern two unconnected territories and the ambition to found a national identity on a religious one. (shrink)

In written and spoken communications, metaphors are often used as an aid to help convey abstract or less tangible concepts. However, the benefits of using visual metaphors in visualization have so far been inconclusive. In this work, we report an empirical study to evaluate hypotheses that visual metaphors may aid memorization, visual search and concept comprehension. One major departure from previous metaphor-related experiments in the literature is that we make use of a dual-task methodology in our experiment. This design offers (...) an abstraction of typical situations where viewers do not have their full attention focused on visualization (e.g., in meetings and classes). The use of the secondary task introduces “divided attention”, and makes the effects of visual metaphors more observable. In addition, it also serves as additional masking in memory-based trials. The results of this study show that visual metaphors can help participants better remember the information depicted in visualization. On the other hand, visual metaphors can have a negative impact on the speed of visual search. The results also show a complex pattern as to the benefits of visual metaphors in helping participants grasp key concepts from visualization. (shrink)

Plea bargaining in criminal cases is a process whereby the accused and the prosecution work out a mutually satisfactory disposition of the case, subject to court approval (daan vs. Sandiganbayan, g.R. Nos. 163972-77). The supreme court (sc) has issued new guidelines that enhanced and clarified plea bargaining in illegal drug cases where an accused seeks to plead guilty to a lesser offense for a lighter penalty. Mesa police station (ps-8) currently and formerly designated as station drug enforcement unit and selected barangay anti-drug abuse council (badac) members wherein persons who availed plea bargaining reside were the respondents of the study. The area of study was done at sta. Mesa police station (ps-8), manila. Santa Mesa is a district in Manila, Philippines. It was found out that the PNP personnel assessed believed that the persons who entered plea bargaining agreements have fully supported the police officers in drug police operations. Origin of the Yellowstone hotspot & Columbia River Basalts has remained uncertain until now. Here, we present evidence of meteorite impact origin. The hotspot is shallow, only 200 km deep, invalidating a theory of mantle plume origin. The hotspot track runs from the Yellowstone National Park in NW Wyoming to the volcanic Modoc Plateau in NE California. We present evidence of apparent remnants of an impact crater existing in the Modoc, a large multi-ring structure at least 160 km diameter. Much (...) of the complex crater has become obliterated by later Cascadia and Sierra orogenies. The crater has a tall 4,100 foot central uplift cone, locally known as Chalk Mountain, consisting of diatomaceous earth, presumably the rebound cone of a meteorite impact. This falsifies a theoretical prohibition of cosmic impact volcanism. Based on recent insights into explosive volcanism a plausible mechanism is proposed for how meteorite impacts can lead to resurgent calderas of the Yellowstone type, & of apparent LIP origin from thin crust ET impacts, invalidating theoretical constructs of mantle plumes. We mention chaotic terrains, including plutons, arising antipodal to impacts. (shrink)

The term action of consciousness is used to refer to an influence, such as psychokinesis or free will, that produces an effect on matter that is correlated to mental intention, but not completely determined by physical conditions. Such an action could not conserve energy. But in that case, one wonders why, when highly accurate measurements are done, occasions of non-conserved energy (generated perhaps by unconscious PK) are not detected. A possible explanation is that actions of consciousness take place within the (...) limits of the uncertainty principle. Two models are reviewed that, using the latter assumption, propose that consciousness can originate an action potential in the brain. One (that of Eccles) uses the latter assumption only, and the other (that of Burns) additionally assumes that consciousness acts, within those limits, by ordering quantum fluctuations. (shrink)

The Hoffmann reflex (H-wave) is produced by alpha-motoneuron activation in the spinal cord. A feature of this electromyography response is that it exhibits fluctuations in amplitude even during repetitive stimulation with the same intensity of current. We herein explore the hypothesis that physical training induces plastic changes in the motor system. Such changes are evaluated with the fractal dimension (FD) analysis of the H-wave amplitude-fluctuations (H-wave FD) and the cross-covariance (CCV) between the bilateral H-wave amplitudes. The aim of this study (...) was to compare the H-wave FD as well as the CCV before and after track training in sedentary individuals and athletes. The training modality in all subjects consisted of running three times per week (for 13 weeks) in a concrete road of 5 km. Given the different physical condition of sedentary vs. athletes, the running time between sedentary and athletes was different. After training, the FD was significantly increased in sedentary individuals but significantly reduced in athletes, although there were no changes in spinal excitability in either group of subjects. Moreover, the CCV between bilateral H-waves exhibited a significant increase in athletes but not in sedentary individuals. These differential changes in the FD and CCV indicate that the plastic changes in the complexity of the H-wave amplitude fluctuations as well as the synaptic inputs to the Ia-motoneuron systems of both legs were correlated to the previous fitness history of the subjects. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that the FD and CCV can be employed as indexes to study plastic changes in the human motor system. (shrink)

Abstract- Administrative corruption has a long history in Pakistan which affected each public institution since its inception. Good governance in Pakistan never took a sigh due to Bribery in public sector and versatile Miraculous of Corruption in Public Administration. Administrative corruption possesses a multidimensional and complex phenomenon that has been created by numerous factors to affect at a wide range and each segment of society to be exhibited in a diversity of roles and traits. This study is considering significance of (...) the subject and discovers the respondents’ response and identifies the causes and consequence of this dilemma. The current research attempts to measure the administrative corruption in education sector in Sindh and it also encompasses the implications on education professionals’ performance and their profession. For data analysis, sampling was derived from teaching, and non-teaching staff in education sector to construct open ended questionnaires and respondents’ privacy was ensured to fill the survey items. For data collection, 203 respondents feedback was secured and analysis was carried out by means of SPSS. The self-constructed questionnaires were used and the findings of the study support the administrative corruption in education sector was faced by respondents in the form of agent and non-agent based corruption in the treasury and concerned offices in the education department. In this way, agent based corruption and non-agent based corruption maintain positive and significant relation with Administrative Corruption. Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the utilization of ICT in education administration and management in a Pakistan context during the pandemic outbreak. In data collection 350 questionnaires were distributed and respondents’ feedback remained 243 (69.4%) and population was investigated on the basis of affecting antecedents towards teachers’ performance at middle and higher secondary level and random sampling technique was applied. Five points Likert scale tool was used to collect the data and analysis was carried out via SPSS version 24. Lowering performance hampers the education transmission to coming generation and it results to professional dissatisfaction and unfriendliness to class room environment. The reflexive attitudes of teacher relate to boredom, monotony and ineffective delivery of teaching objectives and scarcity of interest prevail and feelings like deprivation to students and coworkers to become a reason to discontent and discomfort towards the organization. This study investigates the perception of students regarding their adoption of digital assessment during COVID-19 outbreak to evaluate their educational activities. The aim of this study is to provide an empirical investigation of online via discovering the intentional approach of electronic learning users in Pakistan during COVID-19 outbreak. The interpretation of the questionnaires of student and teachers is based on the data that has been collected from the public universities in Sindh. For investigating users of digital assessment behavioral determinants were applied in which (PEOU, PU, SI and OA) measured with and intention to use digital assessment (ITDA) and proposed determinants users intention during the outbreak of the pandemic. The prevailing survey study follows the conceptual proposed framework model that assists to investigate the users' perception towards students' online assessment. For the data analysis 413 questionnaires were distributed and 286 respondents feedback restored by filling the research items online means. Moreover, SPSS version 24 was adopted and hypothesis tested through egressions and correlations. ABSTRACT For learning any language, motivation plays a vital role. This study aims to investigate collegiate students’ predictive motivational factors toward students’ attitude toward learning English as secondary language. This is a cross-sectional study in which questionnaire was adapted from the existing literature for data collection. For this quantitative study data were collected from two government degree colleges of Larkana. Total 400 questionnaires were randomly distributed among intermediate students both boys and girls, out of that 247 were returned. Data were (...) analyzed using statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) version 24. Initially, data were cleaned by identifying missing values and outliers. Study hypotheses were examined using Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA). The findings of this study revealed that instrumental motivation and parental encouragement (independent variables) have positive and significant relationship with attitude toward learning English. However, one variable i.e. integrative motivation was not found as a significant and positive predictor of the dependent variable. Like any study, this study also possesses few limitations, such as sample size, time horizon, and context of the study. In the end, future directions are given for further exploration. (shrink)

Abstract- This study's objective is to examine how people perceive about the technology. Use by public employees via interpreting the intentional approach of users in Pakistan context. The prevailing research inculcates the behavioral constructs such as "perceived usefulness" (PU), " Trust in technology (TIT), "intention to utilize (ITU)," and "perceived ease of use" (PEOU), together with other relevant considerations, affect how an employee feels about their employer's tendency to utilize modern technology in the public sector. TAM and Technology Acceptance Model (...) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance (UTAUT) are to be applied respectively. Use of Technology is to be incorporated into its theoretical underpinnings, both of which are helpful in determining an employee's intent with regard to the usage of e-government services. The proposed conceptual framework model was empirically tested by using a sampling method to collect 243 responses out of a total of 400 survey items that were distributed among public employees. Data were gathered using the suggested survey questions, which analyzed by using SPSS version 24 and included hypothesis tests validated by multiple regressions and pearson's correlation. According to the findings of the research that was conducted, all of the proposed factors have a positive and significant relationship with the dependent construct intention to use (ITU) e-Government.\and the present research also encircled limitation, practical implications and future direction. The significance of and the role played by Knowledge Management (KM) is ever increasing in today's business and organizational decision-making environment. This paper attempts to underline the importance of organizing knowledge not for its own sake, but for its efficient use in organizational decision making. The tremendous explosion of knowledge resources, both electronic and conventional, within the last few decades calls for an understanding of how knowledge is organized for management of data and information. This is so for the reason (...) that they can be proficiently employed to create value and utility. This also calls for a search for 'relevance' in KM with regard to its situated nature in different contexts within which knowledge is situated, and that which nevertheless indirectly refers to its ontological scaffolding. We have devised two simple mathematical models of reference with regard to the design of the systems mostly intended for organizing knowledge in knowledge organizations for its most efficient utilization. The model specifies several unique scenarios aided by discovery of arguments related to its ontological framework within which knowledge is situated. Several contexts were drawn to draw inferences from the research study. Choice experiment (CE) is a questionnaire based method that the accuracy of research questionnaire determines the validity of the research outcomes. Attribute selection has a prime importance in every CE studies. If respondents do not understand or do not have preference for a certain attribute, the attribute non-attendance problem might happen that biases overall results of the research. Qualitative approaches such as literature review, focus group discussion, and in depth discussion commonly applied in CE researches. However, especially in the developing (...) countries context where ethnical and cultural diversity is a challenge in conducting survey based questionnaires, qualitative methods are not sufficient in selecting attributes. Present study investigates the application of relative importance index (RII) in respondents¡¯ preference for attributes in a modal shift study in Klang Valley, Malaysia. The 5 point Likert scale questions were employed to enhance respondents¡¯ preferences for initial 24 selected attributes. The results of this study showed that from 24 pre-selected attributes, only 18 of them had RII>0.5 and could be included in the final CE design. The results of this study could help researchers to control for unobserved problems in selecting the attributes which could not be discovered through qualitative approaches. -/- . (shrink)

ABSTRACT This review begins with two quotations from the paper: its abstract and the first paragraph of the conclusion. The point of the quotations is to make clear by the “give-them-enough-rope” strategy how murky, incompetent, and badly written the paper is. I know I am asking a lot, but I have to ask you to read the quoted passages—aloud if (...) possible. Don’t miss the silly attempt to recycle Kant’s quip “Concepts without intuitions are empty; intuitions without concepts are blind”. What the paper was aiming at includes the absurdity: “Proofs without definitions are empty; definitions without proofs are, if not blind, then dumb.” But the author even bollixed this. The editor didn’t even notice. The copy-editor missed it. And the author’s proof-reading did not catch it. In order not to torment you I will quote the sentence as it appears: “In a slogan: proofs without definitions are empty, merely the aimless manipulation of signs according to rules; and definitions without proofs are, if no blind, then dumb.”[sic] The rest of my review discusses the paper’s astounding misattribution to contemporary logicians of the information-theoretic approach. This approach was cruelly trashed by Quine in his 1970 Philosophy of Logic, and thereafter ignored by every text I know of. The paper under review attributes generally to modern philosophers and logicians views that were never espoused by any of the prominent logicians—such as Hilbert, Gödel, Tarski, Church, and Quine—apparently in an attempt to distance them from Frege: the focus of the article. On page 310 we find the following paragraph. “In our logics it is assumed that inference potential is given by truth-conditions. Hence, we think, deduction can be nothing more than a matter of making explicit information that is already contained in one’s premises. If the deduction is valid then the information contained in the conclusion must be contained already in the premises; if that information is not contained already in the premises […], then the argument cannot be valid.” Although the paper is meticulous in citing supporting literature for less questionable points, no references are given for this. In fact, the view that deduction is the making explicit of information that is only implicit in premises has not been espoused by any standard symbolic logic books. It has only recently been articulated by a small number of philosophical logicians from a younger generation, for example, in the prize-winning essay by J. Sagüillo, Methodological practice and complementary concepts of logical consequence: Tarski’s model-theoretic consequence and Corcoran’s information-theoretic consequence, History and Philosophy of Logic, 30 (2009), pp. 21–48. The paper omits definitions of key terms including ‘ampliative’, ‘explicatory’, ‘inference potential’, ‘truth-condition’, and ‘information’. The definition of prime number on page 292 is as follows: “To say that a number is prime is to say that it is not divisible without remainder by another number”. This would make one be the only prime number. The paper being reviewed had the benefit of two anonymous referees who contributed “very helpful comments on an earlier draft”. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Albania, similar to other markets, operate in complex, fast-paced and unpredictable environments due to their size and nature. In our contemporary knowledge-based economy, business is constantly changing, and SMEs are thus continually faced with the challenge to find new and innovative ways to improve and adapt to the rapid transformations. As a result, there is a growing interest and necessity for SMEs to explore and adapt new and innovative mechanisms for better decision making, which (...) will then lead to improved performance and competitiveness. Digitalization of SMEs with the use of Business Intelligence (BI) and Knowledge Management (KM) systems is one such innovative instrument open to SMEs for a better performance and increased competitiveness. The research for this doctoral thesis is then set precisely in this configuration whereby: on one hand the current level of adoption and use of advanced ICTs and technological innovation within SMEs, or business digitalization as will be coined later, is relatively limited due to a variety of factors; and on the other hand ICTs themselves as technological systems or tools as well as part of business landscape, i.e. ICT as a sector, are a major driver of innovation, modernization and growth for the Albanian economy. This doctoral thesis addresses the gap in the current state of research regarding the development, adoption and use of advanced ICTs systems, i.e. business digitalization, within SMEs. In addition, the research for the doctoral thesis expands the challenge to the impact of business digitalization on performance of SMEs in Albania. Clearly, SMEs have been selected as the central ground of research not only to contribute towards filling a research gap in management and ICTs studies in Albania, but also because of the central role that SMEs play in Albanian economy and their future potential in the digital world. The results show that business digitalization impacts positively the overall performance of SMEs in Albania. Size, age and location of the SME dominate performance and are related to the business digitalisation more than strategy. Also, the entrepreneurial characteristics of the owner – manager also impact the digitalization. Having a clear business plan was also found to be important when it comes to using BI. SMEs in Albania are a vital part of the national economy and the research shows that there is growing interest in ICTs, digitalisation, BI and KM, but innovation is still at relatively low levels due to financial and human resources, which are limited. However, the research highlights that SMEs are very flexible and easy to adopt to change and when this is combined with a visionary owner- manager they tend to move towards business digitalisation. Another finding of this study is that digitalisation have lead SMEs to reconsider and re-conceptualise their business models attempting to move towards innovations that impact performance. Also, the concept of business model innovations is also gaining ground in SMEs in Albania. Findings show that the use of BI and other digitalisation processes is mainly driven by strategic and innovation related motives that are internal to the company and the owner-manager. The use of BI as a result of external technological factors also plays a role. Analysis of the findings show that the use of BI and digitalisation have a positive impact on business performance. The findings of this research paper have practical implications for the SMEs sector in Albania not only in providing an assessment of the current use of BI, but also in exploring the benefits and potential usage of BI as a necessary activity for deriving improved performance. Findings of this research can be used by owners-managers to better understand how firms can engage with digitalisation and BI and how their adoption and implementation affect business performance. Another implication for business sector is that digitally mature companies have better performance and thus derive more revenue and become more competitive. Finally, the research shows that digitization has a variety of dimensions and can be understood differently by different SMEs, owner-managers and staff, but it is a major contributor to business performance. Future research is needed to explore further the role of digitalisation processes in SMEs in Albania particularly related to enabling and hindering factors. In addition, further research is needed regarding the business model innovations, particularly in terms of human and organizational factors. This study is one of the first research contributions in the case of Albania to analyse the impact of digitalization, specifically the impact of BI on SMEs in Albania. (shrink)

Com o conceito de Filosofia já explicado no trabalho (DOS PROBLEMAS FILOSÓFICOS E SUAS CARACTERÍSTICAS), podemos agora conferir uma ideia mais clara da filosofia se a compararmos com o conhecimento científico tal como atualmente se entende, isto é, com as ciências experimentais. Uma vez a filosofia sendo distinguida com relação às ciências experimentais, faremos uma comparação das soluções que outorgam os dois níveis de conhecimento frente ao mesmo assunto para elucidar, por exemplo, na frente do homem, o mundo, o número, (...) o comportamento humano ou a beleza. -/- 1. DIFERENÇA ENTRE CAUSAS PRÓXIMAS E CAUSAS ÚLTIMAS – A Filosofia estuda as causas últimas (ou supremas), enquanto as ciências experimentais estudam as causas imediatas. Por exemplo, ao estudar o movimento, a física capta o tema por meio de forças, fricções, pesos e balanços, que afetam os corpos. Estas são as causas imediatas, e elas são distinguidas porque sempre permanecem no plano do sensível e do experimentável. Em vez disso, a Filosofia examina os dois princípios que explicam todos os demais, os tornando em sua forma essencial, ou seja, o ato (exemplo: o ato de atritar duas madeiras até produzir fogo) e a potência (exemplo: a potência de um carro que vai de 0 a 100 Km/h em questão de segundos). Essas são causas supremas e não permanecem mais no nível sensível; elas são capturadas apenas no nível inteligível. Em outras palavras, o filósofo tenta chegar à essência do objeto estudado, e sua explicação é no sentido vertical, pois deixa o nível sensível e experimental. Em contrapartida, o cientista elabora explicações em um sentido horizontal, dentro do nível experimental. A diferença fundamental de ambos os tipos de conhecimento residem, então, em seu diferente objeto formal. -/- 2. TOTALIDADE E PARCIALIDADE DO OBJETO MATERIAL - A filosofia procura abranger a totalidade das coisas; seu objeto material é o mais largo que pode ser conferido. Por outro lado, as outras ciências são particulares, para dizer, elas estudam uma certa parte ou setor, entre todas as entidades. À exemplo, a Filosofia apropriasse de objetos da língua portuguesa (linguística e linguagem); da Antropologia (Antropologia filosófica e Cultura); da História; da Geografia; da Física; da Cosmologia; da Ciência Política; da Sociologia; etc. -/- Nesse sentido, já esclarecemos que mesmo quando a Filosofia estuda as mesmas coisas que as outras ciências tratam, Filosofia e ciência não se confundem, uma vez que o objeto formal é diferente em ambas. -/- 3. MÉTODO EXPERIMENTAL E MÉTODO RACIONAL – As ciências experimentais sublinham a necessidade da experiência sensível, como efeito, as leis da natureza não são deduzidas mediante certos princípios, mas têm que observar-se de uma maneira sensata, mesmo usando a experimentação. -/- Por sua parte, a Filosofia, mesmo que não possa prescindir do experiência sensível, insiste no método racional e no uso do entendimento, graças ao qual é possível capturar as essências, os primeiros princípios e as causas supremas que fundamentam o Universo. -/- 4. DIFERENÇA ENTRE EPISTEME E SOFIA - Outra forma de capturar a diferença entre os dois tipos de conhecimento, está presente no que Aristóteles chamou episteme e sofia. Episteme é a ciência, mas entendida não como um conjunto de verdades, mas como um hábito intelectual demonstrativo. O sujeito que possui essa qualidade tem a facilidade de demonstrar com rigor e precisão suas afirmações, ele pode basear sua tese, isto é, ele dá as causas do que ele detém. -/- Sofia, por outro lado, é a sabedoria que o filósofo ama (filos: que ama; sofia: sabedoria) e consiste em uma conjunção de episteme (verdade suprema) e nous (razão). A Filosofia, portanto, inclui também a episteme ao hábito demonstrativo, mas acrescenta outra coisa: o nous. -/- Nous é o hábito intuitivo dos primeiros princípios; é a qualidade mental (virtude intelectual, diz Aristóteles) pela qual um sujeito tem a facilidade para voltar de uma forma intuitiva para os primeiros princípios que servem como base para toda a demonstração e base de uma determinada tese por ele refutada. -/- Portanto, a sofia, na medida em que contém a episteme, participa do rigor científico e, na medida em que contém o nous, aprofunda-se aos primeiros princípios. Logo, chegamos a semelhança e a diferença entre a ciência e a Filosofia. O filósofo é, então, um cientista que investiga as causas e os primeiros princípios. -/- 5. OS GRAUS DA ABSTRAÇÃO -Aristóteles e Sto. Tomás de Aquino explicaram a tripla graduação de abstração formal. -/- No primeiro grau, que corresponde à física, o sujeito individual é dispensado e a entidade móvel é estudada. -/- No segundo grau, a matéria sensível é dispensada e a entidade quântica (a quantidade) é estudada. Neste grau está presente a Matemática. -/- E finalmente, no terceiro grau toda a matéria é dispensada, e a entidade é estudada como tal, no horizonte mais amplo possível, que é chamado transcendental, e que cobre tudo o que existe. Este é o terceiro grau de abstração formal, aquele que corresponde à Metafísica, núcleo de toda a Filosofia. -/- Consequentemente, as ciências específicas pertencem a um nível categorial (particularizado), e somente a Metafísica volta-se ao nível transcendental (completamente universal). -/- 6. FILOSOFIA, A CIÊNCIA REGENTE DE TODAS AS OUTRAS - Como uma consequência do supracitado texto, podemos afirmar que a Filosofia, a partir do momento em que preconiza os primeiros princípios, é uma ciência orientadora; e isso por duas razões: -/- A filosofia governa todas as outras ciências, porque baseia-se em todos os princípios delas. No momento em que um cientista analisa os princípios de sua própria ciência, ipso facto está fazendo trabalho filosófico. Por exemplo: Matemática lida com as relações entre quantidades; mas no momento em que um matemático analisa e critica as bases de sua certeza e os princípios que servem para apoiar suas justificativas, vai além do limite de seu campo e da Lógica ou da Teoria do Conhecimento, que são ramos típicos da Filosofia. É precisamente o que aconteceu nos séculos XIX e XX, quando matemáticos conseguiram esclarecer teses que agora estão contidas no ramo chamado Lógica matemática, e isso deve ser entendido como uma extensão da lógica Aristotélica. -/- Por outro lado, a Filosofia é também uma ciência orientadora, uma vez que regem as normas que governam o comportamento humano, com base na análise da natureza do homem e suas demandas, com o qual ele deriva as linhas gerais de um existência autenticamente humana. -/- Para terminar de esclarecer o tema da diferença entre ciência e filosofia, veremos brevemente como existem soluções em diferentes planos, para as mesmas questões problemáticas. -/- 7. AS SOLUÇÕES DA COSMOLOGIA E DA FÍSICA - A primeira é uma ciência filosófica, e o segundo é uma ciência experimental. Ambas tratam das entidades materiais, enquanto móveis. Mas a Cosmologia estuda a essência, a estrutura primária dos corpos, e é assim que a teoria da matéria e da forma (hilemorfismo) surge, o que explica os copríncipios fundamentais na estrutura ou essência de um corpo sensível. Ela também se dedica a estudar a essência da mudança, o espaço, o tempo, etc. -/- Por outro lado, a ciência física, com seus experimentos, consegue penetrar nas causas horizontais dos fenômenos estudados na matéria. Assim, por exemplo, ela estuda o calor como a causa da dilatação dos metais, a lei da relação entre pressão, volume e temperatura dos gases, etc. -/- 8. PSICOLOGIA RACIONAL E PSICOLOGIA EXPERIMENTAL – A primeira forma de psicologia é uma ciência filosófica, e estuda o sujeito da alma, de suas faculdades (inteligência e vontade), imortalidade, espiritualidade, liberdade, a pessoa. -/- Em contrapartida, a psicologia experimental preferencialmente estuda os fenômenos observáveis e suas explicações, em sentido horizontal; por exemplo, o estímulo e a reação correspondente. Usam-se "testes", estatísticas, experimentos feito em um grande número de pessoas. É assim que as leis surgiram, como Weber (que relaciona sensação e estímulo), e também o interessante estudo sobre o inconsciente, a partir de Freud. -/- 9. A ÉTICA, EM RELAÇÃO COM O DIREITO - Também pode ser estabelecido um paralelismo entre Ética e Direito. O primeiro estuda racionalmente o plano do que deveria ser, o que é requerido de acordo com a natureza humana. Seu fruto está nas normas naturais, assim chamadas porque estão inscritas na mesma natureza humana, como exigências de sua estrutura essencial; elas não são criações ou invenções do homem. O Direito também estuda o plano normativo, só que se refere a normas positivas, que o homem inventa para complementar e especificar as regras naturais. -/- Para fundamentar as normas éticas, é necessário recorrer ao estudo ontológico da natureza humana e da reta razão. Para fundamentar as normas positivas do Direito, devemos conhecer empiricamente a situação real da sociedade e suas necessidades específicas. Claro, que deve-se saber também acerca da Ética, cujas normas devem se materializar. 10. OUTRAS CIÊNCIAS PARALELAS - Finalmente, pode-se mencionar outros ramos da Filosofia que têm seu correspondente paralelismo em alguma ciência experimental. Por exemplo: Filosofia das Matemáticas estuda a essência das quantidades, o básico de sua certeza, etc., enquanto a Matemática estuda as relações entre quantidades. -/- A Estética filosófica lida com a essência da arte e de beleza. Seu método é racional. Por outro lado, uma estética científico-experimental trataria os mesmos assuntos, mas no plano do experimental; seus métodos seriam baseados de "testes", estatísticas, observações na história e na civilização atual. -/- 11. AS RAMIFICAÇÕES DA FILOSOFIA – A enorme variedade de seres e questões no Universo originou uma divisão dentro da Filosofia, isto é, originaram-se divisões que se apropriam de questões peculiares, como a Filosofia Existencialista e a preocupação com a existência autêntica do homem, etc. As ramificações mais importantes são as seguintes: -/- a) A lógica. Estuda as características do conhecimento correto. A correção de um pensamento é sua coerência interna, a harmonização e a adaptação de suas diferentes partes entre si. -/- b) A Ética. É o ramo da Filosofia que estuda o comportamento humano a partir do ponto de vista de sua bondade ou maldade. Este ramo tem sido, talvez, o mais conhecido e comentado ao longo dos séculos. -/- c) Antropologia Filosófica. Estuda o ser humano a partir do ponto de vista das suas características essenciais. Seus temas fundamentais são: a pessoa humana, consciência, liberdade, valores e transcendência humana. Foi por onde nasceu a Filosofia propriamente dita, uma vez que Sócrates é alcunhado de “pai” da AF. -/- d) A teoria do conhecimento. Estuda a questão da verdade, isto é, a adequação de um pensamento em relação à realidade. Todos os autores ao longo dos séculos se referiam ao enigma humano que consiste na diferente apreciação da verdade e das coisas. Cada pessoa tem sua própria interpretação da realidade. Este assunto tenta fornecer as pistas que nos conduzem à verdade. e) A estética. Estuda a essência da beleza e da arte. Entre seus assuntos, os mais importantes são o estudo da criatividade humana e a experiência estética, assim como os diferentes gêneros das artes plásticas. -/- f) A Metafísica. É o estudo do ser enquanto ser. É, talvez, o estudo mais apropriado e profundo que a filosofia empreendeu. Ser é o constituinte fundamental de todas as coisas (entidades), o que lhes dá inteligibilidade e estrutura. No estudo da Metafísica, é onde a Filosofia adquire seu máximo nível e valor. Atualmente, a Metafísica sofreu uma série de críticas por parte de autores famosos como Kant. -/- g) Teodiceia ou Teologia Natural (considerada como parte da Metafísica). É o estudo sobre a essência e a existência de Deus. Deve ser claramente distinguida em relação à religião e à teologia. O primeiro não é uma ciência, mas a instituição que tenta a união do homem com Deus. O segundo sim, é uma ciência, mas sua principal base está na revelação e na fé. Na Filosofia, a Teodiceia tenta investigar tudo acerca de Deus, mas sem levar em conta (e sem rejeitar ou desvalorizar) os dados da revelação, como a Bíblia. -/- h) Existem vários ramos da Filosofia que se aplicam ao estudo de temas já tratados por outras disciplinas. É assim que podemos mencionar a Filosofia da Ciência, a Filosofia da Linguagem, a Filosofia da História, a Filosofia Social, Filosofia da Matemática, etc. Nem sempre é fácil delimitar o campo da Filosofia e da ciência quando se referem ao mesmo sujeito. This study aimed to evaluate the status of newly-hired public school teachers in terms of their TPACK Components and Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) as indicated in their e-learning readiness, perceived effectiveness, attitude, satisfaction, and anxiety. Quantitative research particularly the correlational research design was employed in this study. Thirty-four(34) purposefully selected newly hired public school teachers were the participants of the study. Results showed that among the TPACK components, those that have technology integration were among the areas where teacher-participants need major (...) improvement. Their ERT Readiness scores showed 55.5% of the teacher-participants scored low in e-Learning Readiness, 55.9% scored moderately in perceived effectiveness, 73.5% were neutral in terms of attitude towards ERT, 58.8% moderately satisfied with ERT implementation, and 61.8% showed no anxiety. Findings showed a moderately positive and significant correlation between perceived effectiveness and attitude (r=.56, p<0.01); satisfaction and readiness (r=.35, p<0.05), satisfaction and perceived effectiveness (r=.34, p<0.05), attitude and anxiety (r=.34, p<0.05), but strongly positive and significant correlation between satisfaction and attitude (r=.69, p<0.01). Moreover, in terms of relationship between TPACK Components and ERT Indicators, a positive and significant correlation were also showed between perceived effectiveness and PK (r=.58, p<0.01), CK(r=.50, p<0.01), PCK(r=.48, p<0.01), and TCK(r=.40, p<0.05); and attitude between PK(r=.47, p<0.01) and PCK(r=.39, p<0.05The overall ERT readiness, where 56% of the teacher-participants scored low, is a product of the availability of ICT infrastructures in public schools, EdTech training, and pedagogical approaches in distance learning. In this paper I defend the existence of a Dialectical school proper against criticisms brought forward by Klaus Döring and by Jonathan Barnes. Whereas Döring claims that there was no Dialectical school separate from the Megarians, Barnes takes issue with my claim (argued for in “Dialektiker und frühe Stoiker bei Sextus Empiricus”) that most of the reports in Sextus on the dialecticians refer to members of the Dialectical school. Barnes contends that these dialecticians are in fact Stoic logicians. As against (...) Döring, I argue that the passage in Diogenes Laertius II 113 (first drawn attention to by David Sedley) which talks of a the Megarian Stilpo winning over disciples from the Dialecticians is not refuted by Döring’s arguments. It clearly shows that the Dialecticians and the Megarians at the time were taken to be different philosophical sects. As against Barnes I insist on the differences between the report in Ps.-Galen’s Historia 9 and the Sextan report on the theory of sign in AM VIII. These reports offer incompatible definitions of the indicative sign. Moreover, the classification of simple propositions reported by Sextus at AM VIII 96f. cannot be a truncated version of the (Stoic) list to be found in Diogenes Laertius VII 69f. since in Sextus’ report one of the three classes of simple propositions is labelled middle (meson). This is a certain sign that we are dealing with a triad, and hence that this list is meant to be complete. Therefore the classification found in Sextus and attributed to the dialecticians and the one in Diogenes Laertius reporting Stoic material do come from different sources. (shrink)

Smart Traffic Analysis, Monitoring, and Density Estimation System Using YOLOv8 and DeepSORT, aims to provide an efficient and real-time solution for vehicle detection, tracking, and speed estimation in traffic surveillance. The system leverages YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once version 8) for high-precision object detection and integrates DeepSORT (Simple Online and Realtime Tracker with a Deep Association Metric) for multi-object tracking, ensuring accurate identification and movement tracking of vehicles across video frames. The YOLOv8 model is trained on large-scale datasets for object (...) detection and efficiently identifies vehicles in real-time. The detected bounding boxes, confidence scores, and class labels are then passed to the DeepSORT tracking algorithm, which assigns a unique ID to each detected object and maintains its trajectory across frames. DeepSORT employs an advanced Kalman filter for motion prediction and a deep appearance descriptor to ensure robust re-identification even in complex traffic conditions. Additionally, the system integrates speed estimation by tracking the movement of each vehicle across frames, calculating the pixel displacement over time, and converting it into an approximate speed (km/h). This enables real-time monitoring of traffic flow and assists in identifying potential rule violations, such as over speeding. The system processes video streams efficiently using OpenCV, NumPy, and PyTorch, making it suitable for both offline video analysis and live surveillance feeds. The output video includes annotated bounding boxes, unique tracking IDs, and estimated vehicle speeds. This solution is highly scalable and can be deployed for traffic density estimation, congestion monitoring, and automated traffic law enforcement. By combining deep learning-based detection with robust tracking and speed estimation, this project offers a faultless, real-time, and automated approach to traffic analysis, helping urban planners and law enforcement agencies manage road safety effectively. With increasing publication and data production, scientific knowledge presents not simply an achievement but also a challenge. Scientific publications and data are increasingly treated as resources that need to be digitally ‘managed.’ This gives rise to scientific Knowledge Management : second-order scientific work aiming to systematically collect, take care of and mobilise first-hand disciplinary knowledge and data in order to provide new first-order scientific knowledge. We follow the work of Leonelli, Efstathiou and Hislop in our analysis of the use of (...) KM in semantic systems biology. Through an empirical philosophical account of KM-enabled biological research, we argue that KM helps produce new first-order biological knowledge that did not exist before, and which could not have been produced by traditional means. KM work is enabled by conceiving of ‘knowledge’ as an object for computational science: as explicated in the text of biological articles and computable via appropriate data and metadata. However, these founded knowledge concepts enabling computational KM risk focusing on only computationally tractable data as knowledge, underestimating practice-based knowing and its significance in ensuring the validity of ‘manageable’ knowledge as knowledge. With the contemporary global resurgence of interest in Marxism, including its Marxist‑Leninist form(s), as a theoretical framework that can orient contemporary struggles against capitalism and its attendant depredations, it has become even more urgent to address some of the key criticisms that were leveled at Marx, Engels, and Lenin when they came to be treated as “dead dogs” toward the end of the twentieth century. One key criticism was the charge that alleged that Marxism, including its Marxist‑Leninist form(s), was and (...) is irredeemably Eurocentric in character. While there have been attempts to counter such charges by excavating and reframing Marx’s writings on the “non‑Western world,” this essay proposes to take another approach toward the charge of Eurocentrism in relation to Marxism (and Marxism‑Leninism in particular). This essay proposes to contribute to responses to the charge of Eurocentrism, by taking seriously the theoretical contributions of two African Marxists to the development of Marxism‑Leninism. This essay shows the specific ways in which two prominent East African Marxists, namely Abdul Rahman Mohamed Babu (1924–1996) and Dani Wadada Nabudere (1932–2011) were both deeply influenced by Lenin and made important contributions to Marxism‑Leninism. Suppositions can be introduced in either the indicative or subjunctive mood. The introduction of either type of supposition initiates judgments that may be either qualitative, binary judgments about whether a given proposition is acceptable or quantitative, numerical ones about how acceptable it is. As such, accounts of qualitative/quantitative judgment under indicative/subjunctive supposition have been developed in the literature. We explore these four different types of theories by systematically explicating the relationships canonical representatives of each. Our representative qualitative accounts of indicative (...) and subjunctive supposition are based on the belief change operations provided by AGM revision and KM update respectively; our representative quantitative ones are offered by conditionalization and imaging. This choice is motivated by the familiar approach of understanding supposition as `provisional belief revision' wherein one temporarily treats the supposition as true and forms judgments by making appropriate changes to their other opinions. To compare the numerical judgments recommended by the quantitative theories with the binary ones recommended by the qualitative accounts, we rely on a suitably adapted version of the Lockean thesis. Ultimately, we establish a number of new results that we interpret as vindicating the often-repeated claim that conditionalization is a probabilistic version of revision, while imaging is a probabilistic version of update. Quantum computing offers the potential to exponentially speed up computations, which can be leveraged to overcome the limitations of classical computing in training and inference for machine learning models. Quantum algorithms promise to enhance machine learning tasks, such as optimization, data processing, and pattern recognition, by solving problems that are computationally infeasible for classical machines. In written and spoken communications, figures of speech (e.g., metaphors and synecdoche) are often used as an aid to help convey abstract or less tangible concepts. However, the benefits of using rhetorical illustrations or embellishments in visualization have so far been inconclusive. In this work, we report an empirical study to evaluate hypotheses that visual embellishments may aid memorization, visual search and concept comprehension. One major departure from related experiments in the literature is that we make use of a dual-task (...) methodology in our experiment. This design offers an abstraction of typical situations where viewers do not have their full attention focused on visualization (e.g., in meetings and lectures). The secondary task introduces “divided attention”, and makes the effects of visual embellishments more observable. In addition, it also serves as additional masking in memory-based trials. The results of this study show that visual embellishments can help participants better remember the information depicted in visualization. On the other hand, visual embellishments can have a negative impact on the speed of visual search. The results show a complex pattern as to the benefits of visual embellishments in helping participants grasp key concepts from visualization. (shrink)

Protein α-helices provide an ordered biological environment that is conducive to soliton-assisted energy transport. The nonlinear interaction between amide I excitons and phonon deformations induced in the hydrogen-bonded lattice of peptide groups leads to self-trapping of the amide I energy, thereby creating a localized quasiparticle (soliton) that persists at zero temperature. The presence of thermal noise, however, could destabilize the protein soliton and dissipate its energy within a finite lifetime. In this work, we have computationally solved the system of stochastic (...) differential equations that govern the quantum dynamics of protein solitons at physiological temperature, T=310 K, for either a single isolated α-helix spine of hydrogen bonded peptide groups or the full protein α-helix comprised of three parallel α-helix spines. The simulated stochastic dynamics revealed that although the thermal noise is detrimental for the single isolated α-helix spine, the cooperative action of three amide I exciton quanta in the full protein α-helix ensures soliton lifetime of over 30 ps, during which the amide I energy could be transported along the entire extent of an 18-nm-long α-helix. Thus, macromolecular protein complexes, which are built up of protein α-helices could harness soliton-assisted energy transport at physiological temperature. Because the hydrolysis of a single adenosine triphosphate molecule is able to initiate three amide I exciton quanta, it is feasible that multiquantal protein solitons subserve a variety of specialized physiological functions in living systems.
